How to Make the Classic Negroni

My all-time favorite cocktail, the classic Negroni. Served with aperitivo, with a charcuterie and cheese board. Best. Thing. Ever. Learn how to make it the traditional way!

Aperitivo is a huge thing here in Italy. Probably because alcohol, food and chilling are our favorite things. It’s truly the best. When I think of paradise, I think of me having a negroni and an aperitivo board, watching the Tuscan sunset on a summer day. Ahh, I got a little carried away.

HOW TO MAKE THE CLASSIC NEGRONI

This drink has a distinct apéritif taste, like Aperol Spritz. So if you like that one, you’re on board. To make the classic Negroni you need:

  • Gin (I use London Dry Gin)
  • Martini Rosso or any other vermouth rosso
  • Campari

I always use 2oz/6cl for each component (usually the bigger part of a jigger), because I love this cocktail and I don’t mind the alcohol. However, it is a strong cocktail so if you’re a lightweight drinker you might want to half the recipe and use 1oz/3cl each.

HOW TO MAKE NEGRONI SBAGLIATO (WRONG NEGRONI)

If you still want a lighter drink, you can also make a Negroni sbagliato or ‘wrong Negroni’. This cocktail was invented in Milan in the 70s and instead of gin you use sparkling white wine or prosecco. I love this one too and it’s not as heavy in alcohol.

I’ve also added a step-by-step video on my TikTok. Be sure to follow me and tell me if you liked it!

The Classic Italian Negroni

Yield: 1
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

My all-time favorite cocktail. Served as an aperitif, with a charcuterie and cheese board. Best. Thing. Ever. Learn how to make it the traditional way!

Ingredients

  • 1 part of gin (I use 2oz/6cl but you can half it)
  • 1 part of Martini Rosso or any vermouth rosso
  • 1 part of Campari
  • an orange slice to garnish

Instructions

  1. As I said above, I always use 2oz/6cl for each component, because I love this cocktail and I don't mind the alcohol. However, it iss a strong cocktail so if you're a lightweight drinker you might want to half the recipe and use 1oz/3cl each.
  2. Put some ice in an old-fashioned glass. I use a big ice cube so it melts slower but if it's too strong you can add more to water it down. Add the three alcohols, stir and garnish with an orange slice.
  3. Enjoy with some aperitivo and drink responsibly!
